I have two quite large, very skittish Golden Sharks.....?

  • recently I have noticed that one of my little Cardinal Tetra's has "disappeared" from the tank.
Is it possible one of my sharks ate the tetra by accident or deliberatley? They can fir about six algae wafers in their mouths at one time so is it likely?

  • Well yes it's possible I suppose. Despite years of being a fish nut for many decades I don't know what a "golden shark" is. Most "sharks" in home aquariums are not sharks at all. If you really want to identify a fish you need to use the taxonomic name, Paracheirodon axelrodi - Cardinal Tetra. Tetras in general are fragile and you might find the missing one in the filter. Check that? It could also be an early sign of tetra disease. If they have that, it's all over. Anytime a fish dies you should check water quality. Most deaths can be attributed to poor water quality. You do have a test kit, right?

  • Yes. If it fits in their mouths they will eat it.

  • If they can fit that much food in their mouths a cardinal shouldn't be that difficult for them to eat.
I've never heard of a golden shark though so can't tell you anything specific about them, try to find out what it really is not just what you call it
