How did Roman political and religious traditions encourage or discourage the rise of Christianity?
1. In 306 AD Constantine the I is crowned Emperor, ending the prosecution of Christians (they were often eviscerated by creatures in gladiatorial arena's for entertainment and brutally killed). He also calls the first council of Nicaea to spread Christian beliefs and create a uniform christian doctrine.
2. An influential factor in the dominance of christianity is within Constantine's vision. In the battle of Milvian Bridge, 312 AD, he apparently saw a burning cross in the sky, which urged him to continue gallantly and with courage. leading his forces to victory. This triumph confirmed his previous thoughts of God being true.
3. In 330 AD Emperor Constantine segregated the Roman Empire into two halves - He declared Constantinople the new Roman capital. Constantine was very religious, being a devoted Christian, using his influence to persuade people until his death in 363 AD.
4. Theodosius the I bans paganism and Christianity is set as the official religion in 375 AD- 395 AD. Basically Christianity transformed from an illegal practice to the centre of faith for all roman people in the 4th century.
